But…there is nothing wrong with Aluminum wire

Insurance companies today are asking that you have an inspection done of your home by a qualified electrician, especially if your house has aluminum wiring, and to provide a letter to the insurance company saying that the house is safe. Having a letter will not prevent fires in our home. You need to correct the problem as efficiently and safely as possible, particularly if aluminum wiring is involved.

What to do? Aluminum to Copper Wire Pigtailing

The issue, known as “Cold Flow,” can be resolved through various methods found on the internet. Based on our 35 years of experience, the highly accepted method is pigtailing. This involves disconnecting the aluminum wire from the old plug or switch and connecting it to a short piece of copper wire. We apply a paste compound to prevent oxidization before securing the connection with a marrette or wire nut suitable for aluminum and copper connections. The copper wire is then attached to a new plug or switch rated for copper. Upgrading aluminum wiring connections can ensure safety and efficiency.

It is always important to get a qualified and experienced person to take on this project. Have the electrician take out an electrical permit for this project and have a city inspector check the workmanship. This is to certify that the job was done correctly and that it meets with common trade practices, particularly when dealing with aluminum wiring.
